According to my understanding of Islam, some of the great things about being a Muslim are: Being truthful, honest and principled, regardless of the price one may have to pay for being that way; Being fair and equitable in everything one says or does, regardless of whether it pertains to a dear one or a bitter enemy; Pursuing excellence in conduct, attitude and dealings with people — forgiving those who do wrong, helping those who deprive; joining those who break; responding to evil with goodness, being more charitable than one can afford, spreading smiles and greetings, etc. The greatest of all is that a true Muslims does all these things purely for the pleasure of Allaah, not for praise, worldly rewards or benefits or any ulterior motives. It should be kept in mind that Allaah wants us to pursue excellence but not perfection, because human beings can never be perfect. When a Muslim slips and makes a mistake, he immediately repents and seeks forgiveness. And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us]. O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.

The history of American Muslims goes back more than years. Scholars estimate that anywhere from a quarter to a third of the enslaved Africans brought to the United States were Muslims. Large numbers of Moriscos former Muslims of Spain and Portugal also came to the Spanish colonies, including many areas of what is today the United States. Although enslaved people were denied freedom of religion, many did practice their faith in secret and pass it on to their children.

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the current experience of Muslims in America and the quest for clues as to the future interaction between Islam and American culture. In particular, I will concentrate on three areas: Islamic influence on the culture of Americans with emphasis on how it has affected political and social development; the interaction between Islamic traditions and American culture on the establishment of American Muslim Organization; and the social, cultural and educational trends among the Muslim youth in America. Whatever is happening to the Muslim culture in the American society and the American society as it interacts with the Islamic culture can only be comprehended by the conception of culture as a fluid entity that interacts and borrow from each other.
