To most people, the Cannes Film Festival happened off of movie screens in It was cancelled midway through the proceedings when a group of filmmakers led by Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut called a stop to the screenings in solidarity with student protestors in France. Chaos and revolution were in the air.
The festival had intended to make its debut in September , but the outbreak of World War II forced the cancellation of the inaugural Cannes. Outraged, France decided to organize an alternative film festival. In June , the establishment of a film festival at Cannes, to be held from September 1 to 20, was announced in Paris.
Back when it began in , it was the first major post-World War international cultural event. It is not exclusive and not just about the many celebrities that attend. The Festival is a place for budding filmmakers to showcase their talent and for movie fans all over the world to gather and discover various sides of the film industry. There are many programs and events open to the general public.
