What does it mean, then, to study third world literature today? This is a question that we will return to many times throughout the semester. But in part this means that we will need to understand the conditions of oppression, dependence, racism and colonialism that third world writers have struggled against for years. This class will not provide you with a comprehensive survey of all third world literature in a week course, we can only cover a sliver and will necessarily leave out the majority of countries , nor does it intend to use literary works as representative cultural pieces.
