Equally dramatic, a beginning reader could be taught just 10 words—the, you, to, a, I, and, of, in, it, that—and then recognize more than one out of every five words. Mastery of the top 79 words means being able to read half of all words captioned. The main series of lessons in the ASL University curriculum are based on accelerated language acquisition techniques that make use of "word frequency" research and focus on the most common concepts and words used in everyday communication. I took the most frequently used concepts and translated them into their ASL equivalents and embedded them into the lessons starting with the highest frequency of use language concepts. Thus the lessons are designed to help a student reach communicative competence very quickly-- based on science combined with over two decades of real world teaching experience.

Before I chose this career my parents took the time to educate me in the ABCs and simple signs, I have continued to learn more as time has gone on. Even with my limited knowledge it has already helped me greatly through out my professional career. However ASL is not always beneficial, primarily with those who are. American Sign Language is its own distinct language from verbal English. Common phrases are structured in a completely different manner than in spoken language. A monomorphemic word like 'help' is structurally complex in one sense; it can be decomposed into distinct phonological elements sounds, if you will , each associated with some configuration of the speech organs.
I learned how to describe and write about what the author was talking about in his or her life. I learned the difference between a descriptive, persuasive, expository, and…. To start, I went through my high school English portfolio to see which essays met the requirements of the Portfolio Placement Program at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While doing this, I was astounded to see how much my writing has developed and blossomed since I started high school. I read through some of my essays and decided which ones collaborated with the portfolio requirements, and I determined which essays exhibited my best writing and gave light to my personality and interests.
