However, the stories of Rama and Krishna in the texts include some of their actions, which are questionable to the act of Dharma. This may lead one to question Ram and Krishna as true exemplars of Dharma.

In the Ramayana , spiritual righteousness is addressed through the concept of dharma. Narada does not claim that Rama the Vishnu-avatar possesses these qualities, but asserts that the man — the mortal, human man — is indeed all he is described to be. The distinction is an important one — the text itself supports the assumption that in order for Vishnu to be successful in his quest as Rama, Rama does not and must not know he is a divine avatar; indeed, no matter how fantastic his feats, he never even entertains the possibility of his divine origin. Rama must accomplish his tasks as a mortal man in order to fulfill his dharma, and it is this mortal man who Narada claims is the idyllic spirit of righteousness, not the god within.
